Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of the Basque Country, is just over 60 kilometres from central Bilbao along the AP-68. People make the trip often for work, for business with the Basque institutions and, more and more, for tourism.
How much it costs
- One way, from central Bilbao: on weekdays and at night, at weekends or on public holidays, AP-68 toll included.
- 6-hour return trip: €210 per car, with time to see the city.
What changes on 11 November
On that day, the Bizkaia section of the AP-68 is handed over to the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the toll goes down. If you book for that date or later, the price already includes the new toll. We explain it in tolls in Bizkaia in 2026.
How long it takes
Around with no traffic. In winter, the Altube pass can have snow or fog: we'll let you know if it's worth leaving earlier.
Taxi, bus or train
There are frequent buses between Bilbao and Vitoria that take about an hour. The train isn't direct and takes much longer. A taxi makes sense if there are several of you, if you have a meeting at a fixed time or if you want to come back the same day without relying on timetables.
What to see in a day
- Plaza de la Virgen Blanca and Plaza de España, the heart of city life.
- The almond-shaped Medieval Quarter (Casco Medieval) and its cantones, the narrow cross streets.
- Santa María Cathedral, which you can visit during its restoration on a guided tour: booking is recommended.
- The Green Belt (Anillo Verde), the parks that ring the city. Vitoria was European Green Capital in 2012.
