Getxo sits at the mouth of the estuary, about from central Bilbao. It's the perfect short outing: a bridge that's a World Heritage Site, a fishing harbour and a seafront promenade.

The Bizkaia Bridge

It has linked Getxo and Portugalete since 1893 and is the world's oldest transporter bridge. There are two ways to cross it:

  • The gondola: the suspended car that carries passengers and vehicles across the estuary in a few minutes. During the day it costs just over half a euro per person.
  • The top walkway: high above, reached by lift, with views over the whole estuary. There's a charge and it has its own opening hours, so check the official website before you go.

Algorta's Old Port

White houses on the hillside, narrow steps and bars with terraces. It's less than a kilometre's walk from Algorta metro station.

The Grand Villas promenade

About 2.3 kilometres along the sea, lined with early-20th-century mansions and information panels telling their story. You can start at the Churruca monument, next to the bridge.

How much it costs

From central Bilbao, on weekdays and at weekends. We drop you at the bridge and pick you up at the Old Port, or the other way round.

If you're arriving on a cruise, the bridge is a stone's throw from the terminal. See cruises in Getxo.
