If you're in Bilbao with little time, on a cruise stop, a business trip or just passing through, two hours by taxi lets you see the highlights without hunting for parking or juggling metro and tram. This is the route we usually take.
1. The Old Town and La Ribera
We start in the Seven Streets (Siete Calles), where the city began. We drop you next to La Ribera Market, on the banks of the estuary, one of the largest covered markets in Europe. From there, take a stroll around Plaza Nueva, Santiago Cathedral and the pintxo streets. If you like, we'll wait for you at an agreed spot.
2. Along the estuary to the Guggenheim
We carry on along the estuary: the Arriaga Theatre, the City Hall and Santiago Calatrava's Zubizuri footbridge. The taxi drops you opposite Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum. Even if you don't go in, it's worth walking around it: the flower dog Puppy at the entrance and the spider Maman by the water.
3. Euskalduna and San Mamés
We pass the ship-shaped Euskalduna Palace and San Mamés stadium, home of Athletic Club. If there's a match on, we'll let you know so you can avoid the road closures.
4. Artxanda, the best view
We head up Mount Artxanda. From the viewpoint you can see the whole city, the estuary and the surrounding hills. The light is at its best in the late afternoon. There's another way up: the funicular, running since 1915. We can drop you at the top so you can ride it back down to the centre.
5. Begoña, to finish
If there's time, we stop at the Basilica of Begoña, home to the patron saint of Bizkaia, which looks down over the Old Town. From there we take you back to your hotel or wherever you like.
How much it costs
The two-hour route has a fixed price per car: €70, with pick-up and drop-off at your address in Bilbao. Split between four, that's a quarter each. You can book it here.
Tips
- The Guggenheim is usually closed on Mondays. If you want to go in, check the opening hours and buy your ticket in advance.
- Wear comfortable shoes for the Old Town: much of it is pedestrianised.
- If you're arriving on a cruise, allow for the journey from Getxo. We explain it in cruises in Getxo.
